Dice and Randomizers
Star Probe
Star Probe uses 1D4, 1D6, 1D8, 1D10, 1D12, and 1D20. These dice are rolled in combinations suggested by the game for example a 1D10 would be used to roll both 2D10 and 1D100 rolls.
The game also suggests if you do not have dice or all the different kinds of dice that a chit system can be used. Number your chits 1 through 20 and then put them in an opaque container and the draw one.
1D4: Use chits 1 through 4.
1D6: Use chits 1 through 6.
1D8: Use chits 1 through 8.
1D10: Use chits 1 through 10.
1D12: Use chits 1 through 12.
1D20: Use chits 1 through 20.
2D10: Use 2 sets of 1 through 0. Place them together in the container and then choose two chits add them together counting 0 as 10 and that is the resulting number, thus your range is 2 through 20.
1D100: Use 2 sets of 1 through 0. Place them together in the container and then draw two chits, the first chit drawn will be the read as 1 through 0 with 0 counting as 0 and not 10, then the second chit is drawn giving you the second number of the two digit number, note if two 0s are drawn that equals 100. Thus you should be able to produce 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10... 96, 97, 98, 99, 100.
Note when Star Probe first came out finding unusual dice might be problematic and this chit system is a nice fix for that problem.
Star Empires
I have not found any discussion on dice or Randomizer Methods in Star Empires, but based on my reading so far it uses the same range of dice as Star Probe.
Star Frontiers
Star Frontiers uses 1D10 and 1D100 (in the form of two 1D10 dice). As a result converting to the 1D10 system is necessary to carry ideas over. Though in some cases it would be easiest to use non 1D10 dice.
Gamma World, Dungeons and Dragons and the original Metamorphosis Alpha
Gamma World, Dungeons and Dragons and the original Metamorphosis Alpha all use the same range of dice as Star Probe in various combinations as outlined in their rules. I mention these last group as I have included some ideas from these games into my Star Frontiers Universe. Note Metamorphosis Alpha was out of print for a very long time but thankfully is now back in a D6 form by its original author James Ward.
Metamorphosis Alpha also made the following suggestions concerning randomizers in addition to dice. One could use a small electronic calculator, select chips from a container, or select cards from a packet of specially selected playing cards.
I do use the rules developed by another Star Frontiers fan called Gamma Dawn as guidelines in doing my Mutation Conversions to Star Frontiers. The Gamma Dawn rules were originally developed by Mr. Scott Ireland and then further developed by Bill Logan. I have notes I have developed on my own as well when I convert from the various systems to Star Frontiers.
A Side Note
Though Star Probe and Star Empires are set up to resolve issues on broader scales based on my research into Dungeons and Dragons and these two games there was a planned third game for adventuring. There are several Dungeons and Dragons modules that came out of Star Empires ship crews wandering around in D&D settings and mostly dying. This means these Star Empires PCs had to have had stats that worked with D&D or at least could be converted easily enough to D&D. This third Star game never was produced instead Star Frontiers was developed and produced which uses a system very different from D&D.
