The Malevolent Mana Muncher
The Malevolent Mana Muncher
This wonderful monster comes from a little book called Booty and the Beasts by Erol Otis, Mathias Genser, and Paul Reiche III. With Special thanks to Jack Vance, Georgian Feltz, and Biologist Alex Panesanko. Illustrated by Erol Otis and published in 1979 by Fantasy Art Enterprises
Keep in mind this monster is using the older AC system found in D&D from that time period so you will need to convert and adjust if you are using a different AC system for example.
Looking over this fun wacky critter the fact that it eats magical items should be terrifying to all PCs. Such creatures might patiently track the magical scent of a party, and besides rings, amulets and swords, it would smell things like scrolls and spell books. It might attempt to get into PCs back packs and though it says it’s not dangerous per se to PCs in the traditional sense it is going to sense the magical natures of PCs such as Mages. I would rule because of a Mage’s magical nature their Mana might be something the Triple M might like to absorb. Thus I could see it grappling Mages and allowing it to suck Mana per turn, because it secretes acid and crushes when grappling the Mage will have to save and try to break free.
Of course once a Mage has no Mana left for the day the monster will release the bedraggled Mage. In addition I could see such beasts being kept to deter people using magic in an area.
Have Fun Folks
