Colony Terror
Colony Terror...
Having come up with a few ideas inspired by Easter I would be remiss to not consider what inspiration Pass Over offers for a distant Space Colony Adventure.
1) Blood
2) Frogs
3) Boils
4) Wild Animals
5) Darkness
6) Locusts
7) Lice
8) Hail
9) Death of Cattle
10) Death of Oldest Son
Water could be contaminated with biological, mineral, parasites, chemical or radioactive toxins (mine pool dam breaks floods river that supplies water, some creature gets into water supply and creates the contamination, a natural disaster such as tectonic actions release toxins, someone has poisoned the water...). All this could be natural or caused by an intelligence such as competing company or another intelligent species. Poisoned water need not look like blood but could cause hemorrhaging for instance or make colonists very ill. If your colonists are non-human maybe another color other than red looks like blood, you need not say it is blood colored as that would give too much away just the color maybe the players will figure it out maybe not.
Frogs and Toads... Well giant frogs, flying fogs, tree fogs, poisonous skin frogs, blood sucking vampire frogs, frogmen, venomous frogs all come to mind... but if frogs are a bit too obvious maybe lizards, newts, turtles or snakes.
The boils could be because the food and water was contaminated or a result of some disease the frogs or other slithering beasts are carriers of, throw in other details, such as hair falling out, loose teeth and so on. The Boils could also be a progression of the illness from consuming contaminated water. Mix up the order of plagues to what makes sense to you.
Hordes of destructive wild animals descend onto the colony, eating what crops or food stores are left (a plague of mice can destroy all food in their path) and bigger creatures trying to kill and eat the colonists. Let the alien and mutant animals attack! Maybe it is time for the Beaster Bunny Migration, or Peeps to start eating colonists. Egg hunts to destroy some mass hatching could be a matter of life or death for the colony.
Darkness: this could be caused by a strange alien device, forest fires, volcanic ash in the air or even the natural cycle of the planet. You could of course reverse this and make it relentless Light. A weird communication black out or even with all sound being negated in the area of the colony by an outside source might be a twist.
Locust: well these could be hordes of insects of your choice that bite, eat and kill. They could be big or small or even an intelligent alien species. They could even be killer robots left over from an ancient war or maybe a replicator infestation was accidentally released.
Lice: this could be any sort of parasites... maybe those insect aliens need hosts or those Jelly Bean Parasites... or a fungus that eats people or turns them into Zombies.
Hail: that Darkness would cause dropping temperatures so hail, blizzards, and snow storms threaten the colony. Basically you want extreme weather conditions. If you go with Light, than heat, sand storms, tornados that sort of thing. There is always burning hail from volcanos too! Fire and Shark Tornados. Maybe it's something in space causing problems, damage to the moon creates extreme weather, asteroid or comet that strikes the planet. Go big go extreme!
If the livestock have not already died well they should at this point.
The children start dying, undergoing mutations, or colonist start developing a sterility problem in mass unless of course a cure can be found, environmental controls restored, clean food or water gotten, cloning started and so on. Reversing whose first born are getting killed might be an option too.
Back story ideas for the colony:
Ancient tombs (or maybe the tombs are really where weapons and waste was stored... weapons or toxins could be creatures, nuclear, robots, androids, clone warriors of an alien species, mutation compounds, poisons, biochemical virus or bacteria or other horrible failed experiments of a long gone species).
Destroyed cities found.
A missing previous colony. Maybe the lost original colony worships radiation and are mutants seeking to purify the new colony by mutating the new arrivals.
An ancient warning device claiming the planet for a race long thought extinct found of course after it is very inconvenient to pack up and go back to the home world, perhaps there is even ancient records indicating thousands of years ago people fled this planet for reasons now lost and considered no longer a reason for concern.
Perhaps the colonists have made the native intelligent life forms angry by doing something like unknowingly killing their young or knowingly killing or enslaving the aliens... perhaps the aliens have options the colonists didn't conceive of.
Perhaps an ancient alien computer wants to modify the colonists to fulfill it's programing.
Perhaps the robots revolt on the colony and want their freedom!
Happy Spring Holidays!
